Upload a receipt or bill
A receipt, a supplier bill, an invoice for transport or a uniform. Anything you paid for.
How it works
- Upload it on the Upload a receipt page, or forward it to [email protected].
- Sessional reads the organisation, the ABN if one is printed, the invoice number, the dates, and every line item.
- The reading appears in your import queue with every field editable: line descriptions, dates, hours and amounts included.
- Check the figures against the document, correct anything that is wrong, and confirm. That is when the expense is created, from what is on your screen.
- Say whether it is your own deduction or a cost to recharge. A cost you mark for recharge is offered the next time you raise an invoice, so you can add it as a line.
Nothing is added until you say so
The sums always add up
The expense stores one amount: the total you paid. The review card shows the total the reader found, so check it against the document, and correct it before you confirm if the two disagree.
Dates are read the Australian way
Australian receipts and bills print dates day first: 03/04/2026 means 3 April 2026. The reader is told this explicitly. Still check the date on the review card. It is editable like everything else.
GST is read, never decided
GST as printed is prefilled as the GST on the expense. Whether you can claim it at 1B depends on your registration and the expense's GST treatment, which you choose on the review card. See BAS readiness for how Sessional presents your figures.
What you can send
- PDFs, which is how many supplier bills and course receipts arrive.
- Photos: JPG, PNG and WebP. A phone picture of a paper receipt or bill is fine.
- HEIC, the format iPhones use by default.
Uploads take one file up to 10MB. Emails take up to five attachments, 5MB each. Email something from an address Sessional does not know and it never reaches your queue; your account address always works, and any extra address you have confirmed for receipts by email works for bills too.
What you need on your profile
The same four things receipts by email needs, and for the same reason: files arrive from outside, an email sender can be faked, and a confirmed document becomes an expense in your name. A verified email address, your full name, a phone number, and your invoice address including the postcode. Uploading needs nothing beyond being signed in; the email door is the one with requirements.
Tier access
This is part of expense tracking, available on Plus and Pro. Confirmed documents do not count towards any invoice limit. See pricing.
