Per-state credentials
Everything that differs when you cross a state border: WWCC / Blue Card / Ochre Card, S8 authority, radiation, vaccination scope, WorkCover.
Note
AHPRA registration is national, but a surprising number of state-regulated credentials are not. Sessional's state credential vault records them per (state, kind) so a locum working the NSW / ACT border, or moving between QLD and NT, has a single picture of what expires when.
Working With Children / Blue Card / Ochre Card / WWVP
Every state and territory runs its own working-with-children scheme with its own name, authority, fee, validity period, and verification process. The scheme you hold in NSW is not recognised in VIC; you must apply separately in each state you work clinically with patients under 18.
- NSW. Working With Children Check, five years, Office of the Children's Guardian.
- VIC. Working with Children Check, five years, Service Victoria.
- QLD. Blue Card, three years, Blue Card Services.
- WA. Working with Children Check, three years, WA Department of Communities.
- SA. Working With Children Check, five years, DHS Screening Unit.
- TAS / ACT. Working with Vulnerable People Registration: a broader scheme than WWCC.
- NT. Ochre Card (Working with Children Clearance), two years, SAFE NT.
Schedule 8 authority and real-time prescription monitoring
Controlled-drug prescribing authority is state-specific for doctors. A locum GP moving between jurisdictions needs separate approval in each state, and the monitoring portal changes with the border: SafeScript NSW, SafeScript (VIC), QScript, ScriptCheck WA, ScriptCheckSA, Canberra Script, NTScript. The vault records which authority you hold and when it expires.
Radiation licence
Dentists, chiropractors, and medical radiation practitioners need a radiation licence from the relevant state authority to operate ionising-radiation equipment. NSW introduced an exemption in December 2025 for AHPRA-registered dental practitioners doing intra-oral, OPG and lateral ceph imaging: CBCT still needs an IA24 licence. The vault pulls the current authority from the lookup tables in our state-credentials data.
Pharmacist vaccination scope
Scope of practice for pharmacist vaccinators varies between states: minimum years of practice, permissible vaccines, age of recipient, S4 prescribing pilots. The vault records whether you've completed the state-specific credential and when renewal falls due.
WorkCover / workers' compensation
Workers' comp schemes are state-run and have different names: icare (NSW), WorkSafe (VIC, WA), WorkCover Queensland, ReturnToWorkSA, WorkSafe Tasmania, Comcare (ACT), NT Workers' Comp. Sole traders working as contractors may need to register as self-insuring or carry a policy depending on the state.
How expiry reminders work
The vault stores an `expiresAt` date for each credential. Sessional classifies that date as: expired, expires within 7 days, expires within 30 days, expires within 60 days, current, or no expiry on file. The dashboard highlights credentials in the first four buckets; a cron job sends reminder emails at the 60, 30, and 7-day thresholds (coming in a future release).
Common questions
Why isn't my AHPRA registration in the vault?
AHPRA registration is national and already lives on your professional profile as the `registrationNumber` field. The state credential vault is specifically for credentials that differ between jurisdictions.
Can I share a WWCC across states?
No. Each state's scheme is independent. Some schemes (TAS, ACT Working with Vulnerable People) cover broader populations than WWCC. NT's Ochre Card has its own rules. Always apply separately in each state you practise in.
Are reference numbers encrypted?
No. WWCC and equivalents are printed on the physical card and used by employers for verification via the scheme website, so they are quasi-public. Reference numbers are stored in plaintext. Dates, notes, and the profile relationship are protected by the same server-side authentication that gates everything else on Sessional.
