How to become a locum pharmacist in Australia

Step-by-step guide to becoming a locum pharmacist in Australia: AHPRA registration, indemnity, rate-setting, finding work through agencies and direct bookings, ABN, GST and contractor tax basics.

Regulator

Pharmacy Board of Australia (via AHPRA)

current AHPRA registration as a pharmacist required.

Typical rate

Typical Australian locum pharmacist hourly rate (2026): $55-$75/hr metro community, $80-$120/hr rural, remote, and short-notice (often plus travel and accommodation); hospital bank generally lower.

A locum pharmacist covers clinical work on a session-by-session basis for the organizations that need them, as a self-employed professional rather than a salaried employee. This guide walks through everything you need to do to start, in order, and the common pitfalls that catch people in their first year.

Step by step

Your path to your first booking

6 steps, in the order that actually keeps you booked and paid.

  1. Hold current AHPRA registration

You must hold current general registration with the Pharmacy Board of Australia through AHPRA and meet the annual CPD and recency-of-practice requirements. If you are returning from a break, check the recency-of-practice and any re-entry requirements before booking shifts.

  2. Secure professional indemnity insurance

AHPRA requires professional indemnity. PDL (Pharmaceutical Defence Limited) is the dominant choice for community pharmacists and covers independent locum work. Pharmacies usually hold their own cover for work on their premises, but you want your own policy for wider scope and dispensing errors.

  3. Decide your work mix

Community pharmacy locum work is the largest market. Hospital pharmacy locum work runs through state health services and specialist agencies. Be clear on whether you are the pharmacist in charge, with the governance and Schedule 8 responsibilities that brings.

  4. Set your hourly rate

Most community pharmacy locum work is paid hourly. Metro rates commonly sit $55-$75/hr; rural, remote, and short-notice can reach $80-$120/hr plus travel and accommodation. Check our locum pharmacist rates benchmark for the current range and hold your floor.

  5. Register with agencies and an ABN

Raven's Recruitment, Locumco, and similar agencies place most pharmacy locum work, alongside direct relationships with banner groups and independents. You need an ABN to invoice. App-based and agency bookings together give you more shifts and more negotiating leverage.

  6. Track every shift, expense and BAS obligation

Locum pharmacists are almost always self-employed sole traders, with nothing withheld at source. You are responsible for your own tax return, GST and BAS once registered, and super. Travel between temporary workplaces is deductible at the ATO 88c/km rate. Start good habits from day one: Sessional does the tracking.

First-year pitfalls

The mistakes that quietly cost new locums time, money, and bookings.

  • Accepting back-to-back shifts without realising you are the pharmacist in charge, with full governance and Schedule 8 responsibility
  • Not reviewing the pharmacy's SOPs and dispensing software before your first dispense
  • Forgetting that travel between home and a regular pharmacy is not deductible (only travel between temporary workplaces is)
  • Taking rates at the bottom of the market because the agency said so
