How to become a locum physiotherapist in Australia
Guide to locum physiotherapy work in Australia: AHPRA registration, APA membership, private clinic vs public hospital work, NDIS, rate-setting, ABN, GST, and self-employment basics for physios.
Physiotherapy Board of Australia (via AHPRA)
AHPRA registration as a physiotherapist required.
Typical Australian locum physiotherapist rate (2026): $45-$75/hr private clinic, hospital casual and agency on award rates plus penalties, NDIS capped by the price guide.
A locum physiotherapist covers clinical work on a session-by-session basis for the organizations that need them, as a self-employed professional rather than a salaried employee. This guide walks through everything you need to do to start, in order, and the common pitfalls that catch people in their first year.
Step by step
Your path to your first booking
6 steps, in the order that actually keeps you booked and paid.
AHPRA registration + APA membership
Registration with the Physiotherapy Board through AHPRA is mandatory, with annual CPD. Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) membership is optional but typically expected for professional support and some indemnity products.
Pick your area
Private MSK clinics are the biggest locum market. Public hospitals run casual pools and agency cover for acute, rehab, and community. NDIS and aged-care work is growing fast. Specialist areas (cardiorespiratory ICU, paediatrics, neuro, vestibular) pay more and see less competition.
Set an hourly or per-client rate
Private clinic locum: roughly $45-$75/hr depending on specialty and location. Some clinics pay a percentage of the client fee rather than an hourly rate, so confirm before committing. Hospital casual and agency rates follow award classifications plus penalties. NDIS work is capped by the price guide.
Arrange indemnity
Professional indemnity is required for registration. APA-linked policies (e.g. through Guild or BMS) cover most clinical work. For first-contact, extended-scope, or dry-needling work, check the policy scope carefully.
Register with agencies, clinics and NDIS
Health-recruitment agencies place hospital and aged-care work; direct approaches to private clinics often yield better rates. If you take NDIS clients, register or work under a registered provider and understand the price guide. You need an ABN to invoice.
Track hours, income and GST
Self-employed physios pay income tax and the Medicare levy on profit, register for GST once over $75,000 turnover, and fund their own super. Allowable deductions include APA/AHPRA fees, CPD, equipment, home-office apportionment, and mileage between sites at 88c/km. Sessional handles this automatically.

First-year pitfalls
The mistakes that quietly cost new locums time, money, and bookings.
- Quoting your hospital-equivalent hourly rate to a private clinic; private rates should be higher
- Doing NDIS work without understanding the price guide caps and claiming rules
- Not claiming legitimate business mileage between multiple clinic locations at 88c/km
