Locum work in Queensland
Queensland is a two-speed locum market. Metro Brisbane plus the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast spans Metro North, Metro South, Children's Health Queensland, Gold Coast HHS, and Sunshine Coast HHS. The regional and remote catchment is huge: Cairns and Hinterland, Townsville, Mackay, Central Queensland (Rockhampton), Wide Bay (Bundaberg), Darling Downs (Toowoomba), plus Far North Queensland communities and Torres and Cape HHS. The Medicare bulk-billing tripling shifted direct-billing economics across QLD clinics.
Payroll tax
Payroll-tax exposure in Queensland
The workplace’s exposure drives the service fee it pushes onto you. Sessional classifies it per workplace so the post-fee number is the one you price against.
Queensland permanently exempts wages paid by a medical practice to a GP (contractor or employee) from payroll tax from 1 December 2024 (Public Ruling PTAQ014.1.2; Revenue Legislation Amendment Act 2024). The earlier amnesty ran to 30 November 2024. Non-GP contractor arrangements remain exposed under the relevant-contract test (PTAQ000.6.5).

How QLD rates actually land
QLD metro rates sit mid-band. Regional and remote rates are among the strongest in the country: Cairns, Townsville, Rockhampton, and Mackay are MMM 3 to 4 with active WIP eligibility, and FNQ runs MMM 5 to 7 with full rural loading. FIFO contracts into the Bowen Basin and Surat Basin pay whole-of-package.
