Locum work in New South Wales
New South Wales is the largest locum healthcare market in Australia. Around one third of the national AHPRA-registered workforce lives here. Sydney alone spans five Local Health Districts (Sydney, South Western Sydney, Western Sydney, Northern Sydney, and South Eastern Sydney) plus Illawarra Shoalhaven, Hunter New England, and the Central Coast. Regional NSW runs from Newcastle and Wollongong through to Orange, Dubbo, Tamworth, Coffs Harbour, and Wagga Wagga.
Payroll tax
Payroll-tax exposure in New South Wales
The workplace’s exposure drives the service fee it pushes onto you. Sessional classifies it per workplace so the post-fee number is the one you price against.
NSW Bulk Billing Support Initiative: from 4 September 2024 a payroll-tax rebate applies to contractor-GP wages where the medical centre bulk-bills at least 80 per cent of GP services in Metropolitan Sydney (a lower threshold applies elsewhere in NSW). Exposure is reduced or nil for bulk-billing-dominant practices and remains for those below the threshold (Practice Note CPN 036).

How NSW rates actually land
NSW metro rates sit at the top of the national band because demand is deep and direct-billing service fees are high. Regional NSW carries MMM 3 to 4 loading plus WIP Doctor Stream eligibility in the Western and Murrumbidgee LHDs. Pin your per-workplace yield so the post-service-fee number is the number you price against.
