How to become a locum dentist in Australia

How to become a locum dentist in Australia: AHPRA registration, provider number for the CDBS and DVA, associate agreements, indemnity, ABN, GST, PSI, and the contractor vs employee distinction.

Regulator

Dental Board of Australia (via AHPRA)

current AHPRA registration as a Dentist required.

Typical rate

Typical Australian locum dentist earnings (2026): private associate commonly 35-45% of billings ($1,000-$2,500+/day depending on the book), public dental on award rates plus penalties, specialists higher.

A locum dentist covers clinical work on a session-by-session basis for the organizations that need them, as a self-employed professional rather than a salaried employee. This guide walks through everything you need to do to start, in order, and the common pitfalls that catch people in their first year.

Step by step

Your path to your first booking

6 steps, in the order that actually keeps you booked and paid.

  1. AHPRA registration

Registration with the Dental Board through AHPRA is mandatory, with annual CPD (60 hours over the cycle). Overseas-qualified dentists go through the ADC assessment pathway. Confirm any conditions on your registration before accepting locum work.

  2. Get a provider number for schemes you bill

A Medicare provider number through Services Australia lets you bill the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) and DVA work. Most private dental income is paid directly by patients or their health funds. Request provider numbers early if you will do CDBS or DVA work.

  3. Secure indemnity before any clinical work

Professional indemnity is required for registration. Avant, Dental Protection, and Guild are common providers. Premiums reflect scope and claims history; implants, endo, and oral surgery push them up. Check run-off cover before switching providers: gaps here are costly.

  4. Pick your private / public / mixed mix

Private associate locum work is usually paid as a percentage of billings (commonly 35-45% of gross), so daily take depends on the book. Public dental services run casual and agency cover on award rates. Specialist locums (endo, perio, oral surgery, implants) earn substantially more per day.

  5. Register with agencies, corporates and an ABN

Dental recruitment agencies and corporate groups (for example Bupa Dental, National Dental Care, Pacific Smiles) hire locums, often directly. Independents place work through agencies and word of mouth. You need an ABN to invoice.

  6. Get the associate agreement and tax right

The ATO scrutinises dental associate arrangements: your agreement should reflect genuine contracting (your own hours, materials where applicable, ability to refuse work). Associate income earned for your personal skill is often PSI, which limits splitting. Budget around 30% for tax plus the Medicare levy, register for GST appropriately, and fund your own super.

First-year pitfalls

The mistakes that quietly cost new locums time, money, and bookings.

  • Indemnity run-off gap when switching providers
  • Associate agreements that fail ATO contractor tests; hours, materials, and substitution language matter
  • Percentage-of-billings arrangements with a thin book meaning a low day's take
  • Hep B titre or radiation-licence gaps blocking bookings at short notice
  • Endodontic, periodontal, or oral-surgery scope creep without notifying indemnity
